Obituary

Stephen A. Mahoney, 67, died August 16th at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio following several years of illness. He was born May 18th, 1956, in Springfield, Ohio, the son of Mary Anne Oster and John J. Mahoney, one of a rambunctious brood of nine children. He was a graduate of Springfield South High School and earned both undergraduate and master’s degrees from Wright State University. Steve found his passion for art in high school, particularly while working on the yearbook. When he arrived at South High, his new school, as a sophomore, he decided to try out for the cross country team in order to meet new people. He was immediately hooked with running, which became a life-long passion. He was a devoted educator, teaching art in the Vandalia Butler School System for 35 years. His legacy lives on through the generations of art students who found their passion for the arts and creativity through his teaching. He helped guide many of his students to pursue careers in the creative fields. He also took great pride in helping to conceptualize, construct and maintain the Butler Alumni Courtyard. Please take a moment to remember him the next time you visit the courtyard. Steve deeply loved his wife, Kelly, who was truly his best friend, and his son, Tom. But he had other loves as well: movies, westerns and high-energy action films in particular; any and everything Irish (he was a proud Roman Catholic Irishman); working on his house and building furniture; writing and illustrating; antiquing; reading history; and sharing laughs with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers, Philip, John and Vincent. Steve is survived by his wife and son; sisters Anne and Eileen; brothers Dennis, Martin and Matthew; mother and father in law Melvie and Joseph Henry; nieces and nephews; brothers in law Mark and Todd Henry; and many cousins. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Visions Endowment Fund #3149 (https://visionsendowmentfund.org/make-a-donation/) in Steve's memory for teachers and unique learning opportunities.
