Floyd Hilderbran Obituary

HILDERBRAN, Floyd E., age 86 of Vandalia, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday August 26, 2020. He was born October 19, 1933 near Locust Grove, Ohio.  He is the son of the late Ora & Donna (Hoop) Hilderbran. Floyd was a United States Army Veteran and retired employee of the Inland division of GM with over 55 years of service, where he begrudgingly retired at the age of 74.  Floyd's biggest passion in life was taking care of his family and friends. He never knew a stranger and was known as “Papaw" to everyone he met. Floyd was an avid sports fan, coached little league and collected numerous awards for bowling.  He was the catcher for a senior softball championship team, until a surgery rendered him unable to play at 81 years old. It was the simple things in life that he loved the most.  Nothing made him happier than seeing a smile on a child's face, working in his yard, and caring for his pets. He loved his Cincinnati Reds and The Ohio State Buckeyes.  He could usually be found wearing his signature, red, baseball cap.

Preceded in death by his wife, Ruth and his son, Dale.  Floyd is survived by his two children, Jay Hilderbran (Mary) of Johnstown, OH and Lori Halsey (Tracy) of Vandalia; 1 brother, Robert Hilderbran; 5 sisters, Barbara Key, Mary Day, Louella Rihm, Carol Fletcher & Gail Carre; his four grandchildren, Kara Colbert (Kyle), Katherine Jarmy (Brian), Brianna and Gabriel Halsey, great-grandchildren, Kayla, Lainey, Mia, Emmy, Madison & Eleanor; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

The family will receive friends at the Vandalia United Methodist Church, 200 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia on Thursday, September 3, from 11:30 am until 1:30 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 1:30 pm.  Interment with military honors will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery.   Please be courteous of the Hilderbran Family during this difficult time as numerous family members are medically compromised so we respectfully request that everyone in attendance wear a mask and practice social distancing.  Arrangements entrusted to Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, Vandalia.
