Sharon Elizabeth Wick, age 72, lovingly known as “Sleepy Sherri” by her kids due to her many years of working midnight shifts, passed away on December 23, 2021 at Hospice of Dayton.  Sherri suffered a stroke on December 11th and never recovered.

Born April 11, 1949 to Gerald and Mary Mahan, Sherri grew up in Jackson Center, Ohio.  It was there she met and married Ron Chiles.  She and Ron had two daughters, Lori Chiles of Sidney, Ohio, and Jennifer Chiles of Vandalia, Ohio.  Sherri and Ron divorced in 1976 but vowed they would always raise their children together and they did just that.

Sherri protected and served the citizens of Shelby County for 25 years, working at the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office.  During her tenure, Sherri served in many capacities including Jail Matron, Corrections, Special Deputy, Undercover Investigations, and Deputy Sheriff.  She also took on a second job selling Avon so she could provide for her children.

When her kids were teenagers, Sherri was known as the “cool mom”, taking all the kids toilet papering, going to haunted houses, playing video games with everyone, teaching them how to drive like a boss, and holding creepy seances on the front porch on dark, stormy nights.  She was an avid reader and had hundreds of murder-mystery novels in her library.  Sherri was an author herself, and had a police-themed Christmas poem published in the Gall’s law enforcement magazine in 1996.  She was also THE biggest American Idol fan, and if you’re curious as to who won any season, she’s got it logged in a journal somewhere!

Sherri is survived by her girls Lori and Jennifer, two grandsons, Cody Stewart and Christian Martin, two great-granddaughters, Liberty and Ava, all of Sidney, Ohio, her sister Patricia Corrigan and her family of Sedona, Arizona, her two cats Kit Kat and Jack, along with many friends and her “Blue family” of the law enforcement community.

There will be no services at this time.  The family will hold a celebration of life in the summer as Sherri loved the sunshine.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Shelby County Humane Society, 610 Gearhart Road, Sidney, Ohio, in Sherri’s name, to honor her love of all animals.

The family also wishes to specially thank the Kettering Hospital ICU staff (her amazing nurse Sarah G) and the wonderful staff at Hospice of Dayton for the way they cared for Sherri.  She was treated with love, respect, and dignity by these great people.
