Russell Gump Jr. (“Gumpie”), son of Neva and Russell Gump Sr., passed away peacefully on October 12, surrounded by his loving family. A resident of Englewood for more than 45 years, he was born on July 21, 1944, in Piqua, Ohio.
Russell graduated from Piqua High School and went on to attend Sinclair Community College. He built a successful career at BF Goodrich, where he tested wheels and brakes for airplanes and even space shuttles. Anyone who knew Gumpie will remember him as the life of the party, always ready with a joke, a dance, or a costume that made you do a double take. Whether he was dressed as Superman, disco dancing in his button-down shirts and gold chain, or channeling his look-alike Sonny Bono, he brought laughter and fun wherever he went.
His creativity shone brightest at Halloween, when friends and neighbors might find themselves munching popcorn from his costume or making a call from his homemade “phone booth.” Gumpie’s larger-than-life personality extended to his constant companion, Maggie, his beloved doodle. Together they were a familiar sight around town, often cruising in his 350Z convertible with Maggie dyed in festive colors for holidays or special occasions. The pair loved bringing smiles to others, especially when visiting people who needed their day brightened. When he wasn’t making people laugh or working on his backyard turtle pond, Gumpie could be found living life to the fullest.
He loved scuba diving, flying airplanes, and taking his motorcycle out for a ride. Generous to a fault, he was always ready to lend a hand or share what he had with anyone in need. Russell is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Debbie, affectionately known as “Lil Red,” and their two children, Brandon (Lauren) and Holly (Meg). He was a proud and loving grandfather to Sutton and Wyatt, who brought him endless joy.
Gumpie will be remembered for his humor, generosity, and zest for life—a man who never missed a chance to make someone smile. Visitation will be held at Morton and Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia, OH 45377, on Friday, October 17 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., with a service following at 7:00 p.m
