Robert L. Craine
Age 89, formerly of Vandalia, passed away at his home in Troy on Tuesday, January 13, 2026. Bob was born January 29, 1936 in Putnam County, Ohio to the late John C. and Evelyn (Dangler) Craine. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by four brothers, Charles E. (Arminta) Craine, John E. (Carolyn) Craine, Glenn R. (Virginia) Craine and Melvin Leroy Craine; and by two sisters, Frances (Bill) Sroufe and Margaret (Bill) Gamble.
Bob was a farmer in Northwest Ohio when he met his wife, Sue (Demint), on a blind date. Sue affectionately recalls how much her father liked Bob and that, at one point, he told her if she couldn’t stay married to Bob, she couldn’t stay married to anyone. Soon after they were married, Bob was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Texas. It was there he learned data processing. Upon his discharge, he moved back to Ohio to raise a family. His career eventually took him to Howard Paper Mills where he retired after many years of service.
Bob and Sue loved to travel, and they pulled their camper to nearly every state in the country. But most of all, Bob loved watching his grandchildren participate in all their activities—baseball, football, soccer, and marching band—it didn’t matter; Bob and Sue were always there.
In addition to his loving wife of the past 68 years, Bob is survived by his two children, Jill Wissman and her husband, Doug and David Craine and his wife, Jackie; five grandchildren, Brian (Tiffany), Greg (Priscila), Derek (Abbey), Austin (Georgie) and Chandler (Lauren); six great grandchildren with a seventh on the way; and by his extended family and many good friends. Bob never met a stranger and will genuinely be missed.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, January 23, at Morton & Whetstone funeral home, 139 S. Dixie Drive, Vandalia. Pastor Doug Carroll will officiate. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home from 12:00 Noon until time of service. Inurnment will be at Poplar Hill Cemetery in Vandalia.
In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made in memory of Bob to either Salem Church of God-Youth Ministry or Day City Hospice.
