Matthew T. Leyes

July 7, 1950 — June 9, 2026

West Milton

Matthew T. Leyes, known affectionately as Matt to those who cherished him, passed away on June 9, 2026, in his hometown of Dayton, Ohio. Born on July 7, 1950, Matt lived a life characterized by quiet dedication, an inquisitive mind, and deep devotion to his family and faith.

A machinist by trade, Matt had the mind of an engineer, constantly fascinated by how things worked and driven by a desire to improve them. His hands and mind were never idle; sitting still was simply not an option for him. Whether he was tinkering in the garage, working on his cherished 1975 Vega, or embracing his love of racing—especially drag racing—Matt’s passion for engaging with the mechanical world around him was clear. Coffee was “always going,” just like he was, fueling his boundless energy throughout his days.

Matt’s life was anchored by his unwavering devotion to his family. For 31 years, he was a loving husband to Joyce, with whom he shared a deep bond, enriched by traveling together, particularly to their beloved beaches. As a father, he took great pride in his son, Tony (Danielle), and daughter, Nicole, who with their families, filled his life with joy. Matt was a doting grandfather to five grandchildren—Emma, Alayna, Maci, Joseph, and Jonah—each of whom held a special place in his heart. Alongside his human family, Matt’s affection extended to his two very special four-legged companions, Violet and Kylie, who brought warmth and companionship to his days.

Matt’s commitment to faith was a cornerstone. A faithful follower of Christ and a dedicated member of St. Christopher Catholic Church, his spirituality provided comfort, guidance, and strength throughout his life. He was a man of quiet conviction whose actions reflected his beliefs every day.

He also cherished the simple pleasures of life—enjoying the outdoors, tending to the family home, and admiring John Deere tractors, which echoed his fondness for practical, hands-on work. These interests complemented a life well-lived, grounded in curiosity and care.

Matthew T. Leyes was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Margaret Leyes; his siblings, Catherine, Ed, Carolyn, Frank, and Paul. He leaves behind his wife Joyce; his children Tony and Nicole; grandchildren Emma, Alayna, Maci, Joseph, and Jonah; and sisters-in-law Mary and Anita Leyes, along with a wonderful extended family and many close friends.

In remembering Matt, we honor a man whose life was defined by dedication—to his craft, his family, his faith, and the simple joys of living fully. His presence will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him.
