Mary J. Ison, age 84, passed away on Friday November 28, 2025. She was born September 28, 1941 in Dyer, WV to the late Thurman and Nina Hazel (Wamsley) Christian. Mom enjoyed road trips with the love of her life, husband Gary Ison. She had a raging thrift store habit, loved her Precious Moments collection, and had a passion for collecting shoes and purses. Most of all, she loved her family. She is survived by her son and daughter in law Greg and Robin Ison of AL, daughter Trenna Ison, son in law Charlie Walters, sister Lela Bolser of WV, and brother and sister in law Thurman "Rimfire" and Glenna Christian of WV. Also surviving are her grand and great grandchildren Nikki (Andrew) Hayes and their sons Logan and Aydan, Edward "Bubba" Walters, Mallory (Jacob) Sanford, and Ashley (Allyn) Palmer and their children Jayden, Scarlett, Ariana, Aryese, Eric, and Chyna (JD). Also survived by life long friends, the McMahan family. She has many surviving nieces, nephews and their families.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Gary Ison, daughter Theresa Lynn Walters, sisters, brothers, and their spouses Alice (Ray) Adams, Mayme (Woodrow "Buster") Dutton, Henry (Naomi) Christian, George (Tessie) Christian, Debbie (George) Phetterplace, and brother in law Ed Bolser. Our warmest thanks to everyone who visited, called, and prayed for Mom. We appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers.
A graveside service will be held on May 2, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery (Section 20), Dayton, OH. Reverend Greg Ison officiating. Mom, we miss you, your laughter, that stubborn streak that ran deep, and most of all how you loved your kids: The Favorite, the Middle, and the Baby. We love you, Mom.
