Maggie Lee Sumpter
Age 90, of Tipp City, passed away Sunday, September 21, 2025. Maggie was born September 1, 1935 in Lee County, Virginia to the late Hershel & Fannie May (Young) Jones. In addition to her parents, Maggie was also preceded in death by one daughter, Jackie Wells; and by two sisters, Gladys Clement and Shirley Jones.
Maggie was a member of the Huber Heights First Baptist Church and was formerly employed by Rowland Carpet & Tile and the Huber Heights City Schools Latch-Key Program.
Her greatest joy was in spending time with her family & friends, especially the gatherings at “the farm,” where all would meet to celebrate holidays and birthdays.
Maggie is survived by her loving husband of the past 70 years, Joe H. Sumpter; two children, Joe (Jr) & his wife, Melody and Jill Kennedy & her husband, Michael; son-in-law, Brian Wells; six grandchildren, Joe (III), Jackson, Laura, Patrick, Sophia and Canyon; seven great grandchildren; and by her extended family & many good friends.
The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff at Hearth & Home Vandalia.
The family will be receiving friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 9, at Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, 139 S. Dixie Dr., Vandalia. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. where family & friends will be invited to share memories and stories. On Saturday, October 11, a second visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 Noon at Green Hills Funeral Home in Middlesboro, Kentucky. Maggie will be buried at Sumpter Cemetery in Lee County, Virginia.
Maggie’s favorite color was red. All those attending are encouraged to wear something red in her memory.
In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made in memory of Maggie to Ohio’s Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association.
