Julia Joyce Toombs Wall, “Joyce”, age 85, of Troy, Ohio returned to her Heavenly Father on August 1, 2025.
Joyce was born in Saxe, VA on January 9, 1940, and was the daughter of the late George Russell and Julia Lipscomb Toombs. Her childhood days growing up on her family’s farm, the Walnut Valley Stock and Poultry Farm, were some of the best times of her life. Joyce graduated from Randolph Henry High School in 1958 where she was in the marching band and played the clarinet. Following that, she attended John Wesley College, where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in English.
Joyce worked in the Columbus Public Schools at Eastmoor Middle School for twenty-two years as a secretary, and prior to that served as secretary for the Oriental Mission Society, now One Mission Society (OMS) in Greenwood, Indiana. With her fluent writing, typing, and shorthand skills, and her love of excellent grammar, editing, and punctuation, she was a great asset to each school and office she worked in. Dotting every “i” and crossing every “t” was her forté. She was always highly organized and very competent in managing the offices where she worked.
Joyce was a self-reliant, hardworking woman of strong Christian faith and fortitude. She served the Lord and others in many ways, such as teaching Sunday school, and was active in a prayer group for several years. A music lover, she sang soprano in her church’s choir, and was a self-taught piano player. She was a member of Troy First United Methodist Church. She loved nature and the outdoors, reading, biking, bird watching, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She leaves behind her husband of 58 years, Evan J. Wall, to cherish her memory. She is survived by her two daughters, Lisa (Jay) Harris, and Christy (Jeff) Iredell; four grandchildren, Sean and Lauren Iredell, Ruby and Scarlett Harris; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Her surviving sisters, Mary Lianos and Linda Kersey, have many happy memories of time spent with her over the years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Sturgis, Carl, John, Samuel, David, and Jerry Toombs; and sisters Alma Wilson and Marian Lenhart.
A memorial service for family and friends will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 9, 2025 at First Place Christian Center, 16 W. Franklin Street, Troy, Ohio. Arrangements entrusted to Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, Vandalia.
