James A Kempton Sr., age 87 of Butler Township, passed away Wednesday, August 6, 2025. He was born, December 13, 1937 in Dayton, Ohio, son of the late Hobart and Helen (Textor) Kempton. James was a proud veteran serving in the U.S. Naval Reserves and was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service. He also ran his own trucking company for over a decade.
James loved fishing, hunting and boating. He loved nature in general. He spent many days on his porch bird and nature watching. James also loved sports. Football was his passion and his teams were the Cincinnati Bengals and the Ohio State Buckeyes. He loved UD Flyer basketball and the Cincinnati Reds. He had great craftsman skills handed down from his father and could fix or build about anything he set his mind to.
Preceded in death by his wife Lucy Kempton, daughter Mindy and sister Kaylynn Kempton.
Survived by 4 sons James Kempton Jr, spouse Caroline, Joel Kempton, Jeff Kempton, spouse, Melissa and Mark Muth, spouse Regina. Survived by his sister, Carolynn Vogelmann, spouse Bob. Survived by former wife, Sharon Kempton. Survived by grandchildren, Victoria Kempton, Dominic Kempton, Chris Muth, spouse Amanda and Lindsay Esch. He is also survived by multiple cousins, nieces, nephews and 3 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm, Thursday, August 14, at the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, Vandalia with Pastor Bob Vogelmann officiating. Interment will follow at New Carlisle Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 11:00 am until time of service.
