Gene J. Monnin

January 19, 1936 — October 4, 2023

Xenia, Ohio

Gene Joseph Monnin was born in Dayton, Ohio on January 19, 1936 to Edward and Velma Monnin.   He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Louis Monnin and sister-in-law Connie Monnin.  Gene is survived by his sister Marilyn and her husband Tom, and six children: Michelle Monnin (Pete) of Florida, Mark (Kim) Monnin of Maine, Gene (Perry) Monnin of Indiana, Giselle (Eric) Vaughn of Ohio, Alan (Alissa) Monnin of Ohio and Roger Monnin of Florida.  Gene is also survived by his 10 grandchildren: Lauren, Claire, Ethan, Allison, Owen, Alec, Addison, Tristyn, Cameron and Luke and step-grandson, Finley.

Gene served in the Army and while working at Delco, he founded Hilltop Vending Company, which he ran with his then wife, Lee Monnin for over 30 years.  It was during that time that he invested in the launch of several different start-ups including ACT II popcorn.   Upon selling Hilltop Vending Company, Gene dove into his other passions including stock trading and golf.  His scorecards would tell you he was better at the first.

Gene was a proud Catholic and was an active parishioner, and frequent donor, of St. Christopher’s Church in Vandalia Ohio.  He was a long-time season ticket holder of the Cincinnati Reds and Dayton Flyers basketball program and a member of the Dayton Agonis Club.

Gene lived a full life.  He would often be seen with a cigar in his mouth and a beer in hand.  He was known to pass along his wisdom often starting with the saying, “I may have been born at night just not last night”.   Gene will be missed by the countless people who were proud to call him dad, papa, or just a friend.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, October 13 at St. Christopher’s Church, 435 E National Rd, Vandalia Oh 45377 at noon.  Visitation will be prior to the mass, from 11-12 at St. Christopher’s Church.  Memorial contributions can be made to St. Christopher’s Church or to the Lewy Body Dementia Fund at Robin's Wish - American Brain Foundation.

Online condolences may be shared with the Monnin family on this website.
