Gary Wade Carroll

Age 78, of Vandalia, passed away Friday, April 3, 2026. Gary was born August 30, 1947 in Dayton to the late Robert James & Mildred Illo (Penwell) Carroll. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother James Carroll (1978) and his wife, Barbara L. Carroll (2009).

Gary was a proud veteran of the U. S. Army having served in 101st Airborne division during the Vietnam War. He retired as Road Superintendent having worked for Huber Heights, Vandalia and most recently Butler Twp. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Wright State University.

He is survived by his wife, Kay L. (Huston) Schaeffer-Carroll; two children, Russell Carroll & his wife, Carolyn and Michelle Huffines & her husband, Rob; one brother, John Carroll & his wife, Michelle; six grandchildren, Zach, Danny, Grace, Elizabeth, Brianna and Elijah; one great grandchild, Scotlyn; and by his step-daughters, Laura (Tim) Nordaune with their children, Nick, Benton, Annalyn; Suzanne (Ladd) Russell with their children, Kadan, Landon, Evan, Madelyn; Jill Schaeffer, and many good friends.

The family will be receiving friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., on Wednesday, April 8, at Morton & Whetstone funeral home, 139 S. Dixie Drive, Vandalia. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 p.m. with Gary’s grandson, Zach Huffines, officiating. Internment with military honors will be at Polk Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions should be made in memory of Gary to either the Salvation Army or Doctors without borders.
