Evelyn R. Sweeney

Evelyn R. Sweeney, 84, of Dayton, passed away Monday, May 13, 2024. She was born to the late Melvin Henry & Margaret Evelyn Obley on October 19, 1939 in Hays, Kansas. Evelyn was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church where she was in the church choir. She was also a member of the Dayton Ohio Bicycle Association and enjoyed cycling and running. Evelyn was a licensed massage therapist and taught tai chi and yoga. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and became a master gardener with the city parks.

She met David I. Sweeney in Chicago in 1960 and was married to him 48 years until his death in 2008. They loved to travel, cook, camp & canoe together. They were wonderful parents and kind giving people.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Anne Elizabeth Huntley and her sister, Carol Ann Moore.

Survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret “Peggy” & Mike Colville; son & daughter-in-law, John & Dawn Sweeney; grandchildren, Jessie (Briar) Schindler, Emily (Michael) Clemans, Daniel Huntley, Kaylee Huntley, Joshua Sweeney, Kristen Meyer & Kyle (Bria) Meyer; great grandchildren, Eisley Masters & Memphis Schindler; numerous nieces, nephews & many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2024 at St. Christopher Catholic Church, 435 E. National Rd., Vandalia. The family will receive friends Saturday one hour prior to the mass (9-10 a.m.) at the church. A luncheon will be held for family and friends, after the mass, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 753 S. Hyatt St., Tipp City, OH 45371. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the animal shelter of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to the Morton & Whetstone Funeral Home, Vandalia.
