Derek Michael Higgins

Age 35, of Butler Twp., passed away due to injuries sustained in a tragic accident at his home on Wednesday, October 19, 2022. Derek was born June 15, 1987 in Dayton to Shawn P. & Debra L. (Schuh) Higgins. In addition to his parents, he is also survived by one sister, Megan Higgins; maternal grandmother, Glenna Schuh; paternal grandfather, James Higgins; his Uncle Michael Schuh; Aunt and Uncle, Maureen (Higgins) and Thomas DesMarais; Aunt and Uncle, Colleen (Higgins) and TJ Moore; numerous cousins and by his beloved dog, Schwarz.  Derek was a member of St. Christopher Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Thomas Schuh; and by his paternal grandmother, Eleanor Higgins.

Derek graduated from Vandalia-Butler High School in 2005.  He was very active in soccer and baseball in high school and attended Urbana University on a soccer scholarship where he continued to play soccer and baseball. He also attended Wright State University and Clark State University earning his Diesel Technology degree.

He enjoyed spending time with his dog, Schwarz, working in his yard, and woodworking.  He had an innate quality for fixing just about anything.  Many weeks and weekends were spent on family vacations at Torch Lake, Michigan snowboarding, sailing, kayaking, swimming and fishing.  He was a self-taught sailor and an excellent pontoon boat pilot.

He will be greatly missed by family and friends.

The family will be receiving friends from10:30 until 12:00, Friday, October 28, 2022 at Saint Christopher Catholic Church, 435 E. National Rd, Vandalia, Ohio. Mass at 12:00 and burial immediately after Mass at Polk Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Derek to the Humane Society of Greater Dayton.
