David L. Smith, age 78 of Dayton, Ohio, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2025, surrounded by his children. He was born on November 15, 1946, in Dayton, Ohio, to the late LeRoy and Juanita Smith. He is preceded in death by his late parents.
David is survived by his three children, Jason (Kerry) Smith, Kristen (AJ) Kovacs, and Kari (Pete) O’Hara of Raleigh, NC; five grandchildren, Rylee and Kailey Smith, Alex Kovacs, and John-David and Poppy O’Hara. David is also survived by his sister, Carolyn DeGallery, and brother, Mike (Vicki) Smith.
David was a proud Army veteran, having served in the Vietnam War. He was a retired member of Local 162 as a Plumber, Pipe Fitter, and Welder for 32 years. He was a Mason and member of the local Amvets. He loved playing poker and was an avid bass fisherman. He spent many wonderful and exciting years fishing in tournaments and had a passion for being out on the water in his boat, especially on Indian Lake and St. Mary’s.
David always looked forward to family time and annual get-togethers with his beloved lifelong Stebbins buddies in Columbus for Stebfest, and he loved attending class reunions. David thrived on being active, working out, and walking for miles on the bike path. He enjoyed the many beach vacations in Wrightsville, NC, with his family.
Services will be held at Morton & Whetstone funeral home on Monday, September 15, 2025, at 1PM. Family will be receiving friends from 11:30AM until the time of the service. Burial will take place following the service at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association in David’s memory.
