Al Swafford, a dedicated and hardworking man known for his unwavering commitment to family, faith, and community, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, at his home in Troy, Ohio. Born on April 5, 1933, in Monterey, Tennessee, Al's life was marked by industriousness, honor, and devotion.
A proud veteran, Al served with honor in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, exhibiting a steadfast sense of duty and patriotism that remained an integral part of his character throughout his life. Following his military service, he channeled his determination and work ethic into founding Swafford Construction in 1958, a company that stands as a testament to his entrepreneurial spirit and tireless dedication.
Al was a cherished member of the One Hope Church of the Nazarene in Tipp City, Ohio, where he found community and solace. His faith was a guiding force, inspiring those around him through his steadfast commitment and genuine warmth.
Even in retirement, Al's love for work never waned. He found joy and fulfillment in tending to his gardening and landscaping his home, passions through which he expressed his enduring connection to the land and nature.
He leaves behind a devoted circle of loved ones who cherished his wisdom, kindness, and strength. Janice, his beloved wife of five years, stood by his side through the later chapters of his life. His family extended to stepchildren Julie Pottenger and her spouse David, Jai Cobb and his spouse Jodi, and Joshua Cobb. He was also a proud father-in-law to Linda Swafford, and grandfather to Brandon Swafford and his spouse Tiffany. His great-grandchildren Landon, Carson, and Carlee Swafford brought him immeasurable joy. Al's siblings, Jack and his spouse Faye, and Tom and his spouse Linda, along with numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and many friends, will deeply miss his presence and guidance.
Al is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Hershel and Louise Swafford; his first wife of 65 years, Lucy Swafford; his son, Allen Swafford; his brother, Dail Swafford; and his granddaughter Emily, whose memories he cherished.
A visitation will be held on Friday May 22, 2026, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at One Hope Church of the Nazarene, located at 1221 W. Main Street, Tipp City, Ohio. The funeral service will follow on May 23, 2026, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the church. Reverend Lou Reyes, officiating. Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Al are invited to gather and celebrate the rich life he lived.
Al Swafford’s legacy is one of resilience, faith, and a profound love for family and community. His contributions to the construction industry, his country, and to those who knew him will long be remembered with respect and admiration. May he rest in peace.
